IMUFLEX blood bags include filters made from biocompatible, segmented polyurethane—a material with a unique pore structure for improved leukocyte removal.

Polyurethanes are polymers in which the unit molecules are connected with urethane bonds, due to the reaction of diisocyanates and polyols. Properly adjusting the variants and ratio of the components helps achieve optimal physical, chemical and biocompatibility characteristics.

Investigation of the mechanism of leukocyte removal with polyurethane shows that the majority of leukocytes are mechanically trapped in small pores or dimples of the material. Very limited cell-material interaction and absence of cellular or protein activation result in the blood products of very high purity.
